Sector 219 entering beta, coming soon to PC and mobile

Tue Apr 05, 2016 5:34 pm

With so many high-profile board and card games making the move to digital, we sometimes forget about some of the smaller gems that have already made the jump.

Man, Hill 218 is good. Plays a role quite similar to Card Crawl; it's fast, there's a lot of randomness, there are some simple strategies you learn pretty early which help a lot, but then there are much subtler, lower impact strategies for various situations which you notice after many plays. I have over 500 plays in, and it's still one of my favorite short games. I reviewed it three years ago, which … means I've been doing this for over three years. That kind of snuck up on me.

Anyway, I backed the Sector 219 Kickstarter at the two-copy level, but I don't have the game yet, because I opted to wait for them to finish the version based on OGRE and ship them both to me. So I've no idea how 219 compares to 218, but the system is similar enough that I expect it to have the same virtues, just with a different set of relevant strategies.

Version based on OGRE? Not "Steve Jackson's" OGRE, surely?

You can see why I was willing to wait. No idea how well it'll work, but the idea just makes me smile.

The Ogre version will play very much like Hill 218 but with the addition of a super powerful Ogre card that uses up both your turns to play and looking at those images it will be able to both attack and support attacks over several squares.

No word on a digital version of that one yet but I've reached out to Steve Jackson Games so let's see what happens :)

I prefer the phrase "vaguely Stratego-like" for Doomstar because the game is immensely more fluid, and much less hierarchical, than Stratego or Stratego's parent L'Attaque. (Or, for that matter, any Stratego-like game, and that includes my 1980 Swords and Wizardry.)
