Review: Combat Mission: Final Blitzkrieg

Wed Apr 13, 2016 4:10 pm

Rick Atkinson’s fine trilogy on the US Army in Europe in World War II approaches the subject in three phases: North Africa, Sicily and Italy, and Western Europe.

Playing the demo now. Pretty sweet. Glad to see the camera is still awful, as it has been for more than a decade.

And NONE of the 3 optional camera configurations (standard, RTS or FPS) suit you?

NONE. NONE of them.

The camera has been an 'acquired taste' for the entire series. I've been playing CM for a little while now, so I'm used to the patented DrunkCam. The RTS and FPS options are even more lumbering, and not different enough to offer a real alternative.

A good review with good information about the game. I have to say the one disappointment is the quality of those screen shots. Everyone should know that the game can look *much* better than that. You can check out the official screen shots that go with the announcement on BFC's web site but even better here is a link to the public forum thread where any game player can post pictures. As you can see many of them are embellished and tweaked for various effects but many of them show what the game looks like at its best graphic settings:

Some of it is just down to having the trees turned off. Having them turned on, even on low settings, makes the maps look much better.

CM has never been beautiful, but if you mod it, it ends up looking quite nice.

This does look like fun. How welcoming to newcomers should I expect it to be?

Stick it on the lowest difficulty level while you're learning, and it won't hurt you too much. Easy to play, hard to play well. Very detailed, exacting tactical simulation.

Thanks, I guess I meant more on the comprehensibility of UI and thoroughness of tutorial fronts. I don't mind getting my ass kicked, even during a tutorial (hello, Taurus demon!), but I would like to know what I am supposed to be doing and how to accomplish it without necessarily having to read a 120 page manual (although I do love extremely detailed manuals).

Yes, I downloaded the demo to see how big the manual is before posting this.

Huge video tutorial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbE8795rt2s

Armchair General Tactical videos (1->6) : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... aZaBH9BRVh

These are for Battle for Normandy bust most stuff also applies to Final Blitzkrieg.
