Endless legend remains as the best example on how to refresh a well known formula of the genre. The differences in gameplay between various factions are this game's greatest assets.
However X-COM 2 WotC is a top turn strategy game currently available.

Thinking about picking up Endless Space 2 for $12 in the current humble bundle. It has to be worth it, right? Already own Endless Legend, but haven’t had a chance to play it much. Also, heads up for those who don’t know: you can get Endless Legend + DLC for under $7 plus some other goodies in the bundle as well (You get Endless Space and Dungeon of the Endless for only $1).

For $12 I'd say most games are worth it (although as a brit that price means more for me than it does for US peeps, I guess). I get the impression it's a weirdly inconsistent experience at times but overall a pretty good Space 4X.

its more turn based strategy then tactics but oke... what the heck you know... The same goes for Warhammer.... The mental attitude thats needed to play the game should actually prevent it from being named in any popularity list. Like you would include one of Germany's 2d ww scientist from in a oversight of people who made great efforts to understanding the genome

I picked up your recommended Warhammer 40,000: Sanctus Reach, with the DLC, as well as Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, during the Steam Winter Sale, but it looks like I'll instead get sidetracked (as usual!) scratching my current 40K itch with the non-turn-based Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, in preparation for the January 24th, 2019, release of Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 in just a few short weeks!

That said, I tried almost all of those games.

From that list, battle brothers is the one I like the most. their turns initiative based, the huge variety of posibilites to build every bro (I have an spread sheet just for builds) and that every campaign feels good till the 3rd crisis, makes it the best experience.

- Gears tactics - brings new concepts, but the IGOUGO turns, and the linear campaign remove the replayability I look in these games.

- Panzer Corps 2- Another clone of panzer generals. with less replayability that the PC1.

- BattleTech - the size of the map, the less units, the subpar performance. I didn't like those things

- Frozen Synapse 2 - FS1 was an interesting concept, with the WEGO turns. It maybe needs another set of rules for combat resolution.

- Phantom Doctrine - This is a good stealth game. And the campaign is not half bad, with all the management of captured spies and so. They went wrong adding wide but shallow content, that could be added via mods. too bad the sequele will be a 3rd person shooter.

- Warhammer 40,000: Sanctus Reach - Only thing playing this game served for me was to see the inbalances of the IGOUGO turns. too much tabletop rules. The campaign was kinda trivial.

- XCOM 2: War of the Chosen - good game, and good entry for the new players. Again the IGOUGO makes this game inbalanced and you can wipe your campaign by just missing one shoot 87% . Another problem I see is the based-console-interface. In battle brothers in less than 10 secons you can change all your company to nets mode, use fear-armour and so on. In xcom you need a lot of time to equip one flashbang. this happens when the interface is orientated to be used with a console controller.
